2015 HAJET Summer Meeting at Lake Abashiri RSVP

Save the Date - 2015 Summer Meeting

Okay folks, it’s time to RSVP for the summer meeting! Wow hurray! RSVPs are my favorite thing in the whole world I don’t know about you but I just get so hyped for RSVPs. The ol’ repondez-s’il-vous-plait.

Either fill out the form below, or if you’re feeling old-school, download the attached Word file and fill it out there, or if you’re feeling super-duper old-school, print out the Word file and write on it with a pen, then scan it back into the computer so Emily can see your beautiful handwriting. If you’re going the download-and-fill-out route, send it along to Emily at If you’re filling out the poll, the Internet will do all the heavy lifting for you, so you basically just have to hit submit and that’s it! Holy moly we live in a truly wonderful day and age.

And what do you know — Emily’s even organized a Japanese-language info pack and request form for showing to your coworkers. Why don’t you print those bad boys out and drop ’em on the appropriate authority’s desk, green plastic desk cover marks the spot?

Fall Meeting 2014 – Otaru! 7-9 November

Fall Meeting 2014

Happy Fall! This year Fall Meeting will be held in the charming city of Otaru. Probably one of the cutest

towns in Hokkaido, Otaru has a lot of wonderful things to offer. Stroll alongside the Canal and eat

weirdly flavoured ice cream, ride up the lift at Mt. Tenguyama and take in the view, make your very own

music box, the list goes on and on. Check out the sightseeing section for all the deets!

We have some awesome seminars lined up for y’all! If you want to discuss the tricky task of teaching

phonics, prepare for the ever-creeping-closer big freeze that is Hokkaido winter, or learn more about

HAJET’s biggest program, Hokkaido English Challenge, then please RSVP for one of all of our seminars!

After you’ve filled your brain with all the information you can stand, come join us for the traditional

Costume Party Enkai and let the wild rumpus start!

All the information you will ever need to attend this years Fall Meeting is in this packet – so please give it a good look-over!

Hey y’all! Are you ready for Summer Meeting shenanigans!? This year, much to the
delight of Eastern JETs, we have decided to hold it at a campsite near both Lake Mashu and
Lake Kussharo. Lake Mashu is one of the clearest caldera lakes in the world and is famous for
picturesque views and at Lake Kussharo you can make your own onsen just by digging in the
sand! Whether you want to canoe, hike, bike, or simply relax in an onsen, this beautiful eastern
area will have something for you. On top of the natural beauty, we also have some great
workshops and events planned for you as well as the traditional BBQ enkai. We hope to see you

For those of you who don’t own a tent, don’t worry! You can borrow one of the HEC tents for 500 yen
per person, per night. There is a selection of 4-man and 6-man tents, so you can either get a group of
your 4 to 6 closest friends together, or opt to share with smaller groups. Please note that there will be
no tents available for rental from the campsite.
Click here for link to google map of campground.
For those arriving by train, get off at Mashu Station, then give me (Emily) a call at 090-6871-
9777 and I or someone else will pick you up from the station.

Outdoor Enthusiast 101
Are you excited about taking great Hokkaido hiking adventures but don’t know where to start? Whether
you are an experienced hiker or a fledgling hiker, this seminar will have useful information for you. Our
presenters will discuss hiking 101, Hokkaido specific information for those experienced hikers looking for
their next trip, and of course, how to avoid/escape bears.
Sexual Health in Hokkaido
This seminar will give y’all the low-down on sexual health in Hokkaido, from securing reliable
contraception to where to go to get tested for STDs. There will be a lot of very useful information for
anyone who is sexually active here in Hokkaido, regardless of gender. For those who cannot make the
workshop (boo), we will print extra handouts to be distributed at the general meeting (yay!).

HEC Crazy Olympics Fundraiser
We are bringing one of the most beloved events of HEC Camp to you this Summer Meeting! Compete
against your friends for great HEC prizes, free dinner, and of course, bragging rights! Take your pick from
sumo wrestling, dizzy bat race, water balloon toss, and the tried and true three-legged race. Entry fee
will be 300 yen per event or 1000 yen for all events. All donations will go towards HEC. More specific
information will be sent out as the date approaches.
HEC Dessert Auction
As per tradition, HEC will be holding the HEC Dessert Auction. Bid against your friends for a variety of
delectable desserts, some made from scratch, some bought from a store, but all delicious! So, bring your
wallets and your sweets, and get ready to bid!
Sunday Flea Market
Another traditional event – for those JETs leaving us in July, this is a great opportunity to clean out your
house and get some extra money for your next adventure! For those of us who are staying, this is our
chance to snag some great stuff and super low prices! Many people have already posted items for sale
on Facebook – the summer meeting is a good time to deliver already sold goods. It might be more
efficient to post all goods for sale online, that way y’all can avoid lugging back unsold goods.

This year’s enkai will follow in the grand tradition of Summer Meeting BBQs, with a selection of
hamburgers, hot dogs, and all of the necessities. Of course, there will be plenty of vegetarian and vegan
friendly options, too! The enkai is 800 yen for members and 1000 yen for non-members. (Drinks are
BYOB.) If you have any dietary restrictions, please be sure to note that on the RSVP form.

One on Ones
As always, Holly Long will be available during the weekend to speak privately with JETs who have
questions or concerns to be addressed. If you would like to meet with Holly, please email her at with the following information:
1) Name:
2) JET Year:
3) BOE / Base School:

Please be sure to send your requests well in advance of the meeting!

For any questions, concerns or comments, please contact Emily Schuster at Remember

travel. Be sure to talk to your supervisor as soon as possible about the meeting, and keep in mind that
we have a Japanese Information pack specifically for that purpose. If you need the information pack sent
to your contracting organization, please email us, or select the option on the RSVP form.
