The 2011 HAJET Winter Ball / Mid-year Maskerade
Dec 3rd
If you’re heading out to Mid Year Conference in Sapporo next week (and we know you all are), please consider joining HAJET on the night of Thursday December 9th for our Mid-year Maskerade. The event will be hosted at Latin dance bar/salsa club “El Mango” from 9pm. In addition to a two-hour nomihodai we will be hosting a silent auction of art created by your fellow HAJET members, and at the end of the night we will be crowning a Winter King and Queen.
What’s this “MasKerade” Business?
It’s like a traditional Venetian masquerade, except a little more ‘open concept.’ Come out in your best semi-formal duds and put on a mask. A Venetian-style one if you’re feeling the more traditional ‘masquerade’ vibe, or whatever madness you can create yourself or pick up at Donkihote in Tanuki Koji before the Maskerade. Literally any mask will do. Heck, we’ll even let you come if you haven’t got one.
Why Attend the Mid-year Maskerade?
It’s a great opportunity to have a good time with far-off friends as we’re all going to be in Sapporo anyway. Plus, it’s for a good cause as proceeds from the Maskerade and the art auction will benefit the Hokkaido English Challenge (HEC) contest and camp.
Where, When, How Much?
Thursday December 9th at 9pm – Midnight
El Mango Salsa Club: 北海道札幌市中央区南7条西3 青樹社ビルB1, just up Eki Mae Dori from the Lifort Hotel, where MYC will be taking place
3,000円 admission, including a two-hour nomihodai
Sounds Great. Where do I sign up?
Tickets will be available from the HAJET table outside the conference hall at Mid Year Conference or at the door of the event. When you’re at the HAJET table buying your tickets, you should also pick up one of the awesome new HAJET shirts that won the T-Shirt Design Competition.
If you require any additional information, or if you’d like to contribute a piece of original art to the art auction, be sure to email HAJET Social Coordinator Nicholas Jones at social.coordinator@hajet.org.
The ball is open to anyone who would like to attend. Invite your friends, family and co-workers be they Japanese, foreign, teachers or otherwise.
Takikawa’s Third Annual Halloween Party
Oct 1st
Takikawa’s third annual Halloween Party and Haunted house is scheduled for Saturday, November 6th, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. It will be held on the basement floor of the Takikawa Ekimae Smile Building. The past two years have brought in over 150 kids, so it is an extremely popular event.
I need volunteers to help prepare the haunted house (an abandoned clinic), act in the haunted house, run the games, face paint, help with crafts, and help with general crowd control. If you are free Saturday please come and help out! My office can provide letters to get you daikyuu for your time.
If you have a Halloween costume go ahead and wear it, but if not I have a few I can lend out.
Please contact me, Krystal Cooley, at krystal.cooley@gmail.com if you are interested. It will be a lot of fun so I hope to see a lot of you there! All are welcome, invite your friends! Thanks!

Iwamizawa International Mini-Festival 2008
Jun 2nd
Iwamizawa International Mini-Festival: Saturday, June 21st
Iwamizawa Higashiyama Koen, 12-4 p.m.

With one of the highest concentrations of JETs in Hokkaido, the Iwamizawa JETs, along with their families and friends, are organizing this year’s Iwamizawa International Mini-Festival. This event, in its 2nd year, fosters awareness of Iwamizawa’s cultural diversity. More than 10 displays exhibit some of the various cultures represented within the local community. The highlight is trying out the many activities connected to each display. You can have a go at playing Aussie cricket, toss a gumboot Kiwi style, try some Canadian apple-bobbing, get your name written in Arabic, and much more. You can even get your face painted!! Alongside the booths one can partake in the numerous culinary delights! Foods ranging from tacos, apple pies, a sausage sizzle, chocolate muffins, to mention just a few, all washed down with soft drinks and juices. It’s an event for everyone, families, kids, adults, and even Obachans.
Check out pictures from this year’s event here!
